A Lyric Hammersmith Theatre Production: Sammy
Book, Music and Lyrics by Leslie Bricusse. Additional Songs by Leslie Bricusse & Anthony Newley. Directed by Clarke Peters
Olivier Award-Winner Giles Terera (Hamilton) leads the cast of Sammy, the major new musical based on the life and career of legendary entertainer Sammy Davis Jr.
At a young age Sammy set his sights on stardom and never looked back. From humble beginnings he shot to fame as a member of The Rat Pack and navigated the racial politics of 60s America to eventually become one of the great performers of the 20th century.
Written by Leslie Bricusse, his long-time collaborator, and directed by Clarke Peters (Five Guys Named Moe), Sammy is a celebration of the life of a friend, an entertainer and a legend.
Packed full of his iconic songs including ‘The Candy Man’, ‘What Kind of Fool Am I?’ and ‘Feeling Good’ performed by a live band, this untold story of talent, prejudice, love and legacy finally takes centre stage.
“Sammy was so important to me growing up. I’m delighted that we will be taking audiences on this journey with us, exploring the life and enduring legacy of this complicated but phenomenal entertainer.”
“Sammy was a phenomenal human being, and a blazing talent, beyond anything we had ever seen. My wife Evie and I saw Sammy perform over 300 times during the 30 years of our great friendship with him, and after every performance we would look at one another and say ‘That’s the best he’s ever been!’ Because it always was!”
“I am excited and honoured to finally be bringing Sammy’s incredible story to fresh new audiences. His triumphs and struggles speak to me and inspire me today more than ever.”
For one performance per week the title role will be played by an alternate actor. The schedule and casting information for this is not yet confirmed, but audiences for those performances will be notified as soon as possible.Book Tickets
